Julian Le Grand"The Giant of Excess: Individual Behavior and Public Health"

Health status is largely determined by health behaviors such as smoking, diet, and exercise. Yet changing these behaviors can be challenging. Julian Le Grand, the Richard Titmuss Professor of Social Policy at the London School of Economics and Political Science, argues that one solution is to simply change our default choices.

Le Grand, author and advisor, is one of the principal architects of the United Kingdom's current public sector reforms introducing choice and competition into health care and education.

In spring 2008, he visited with students, faculty, and staff to talk about the problems of excess, preserving choices, and behavioral economics. Le Grand is introduced by Brown School Dean, Edward F. Lawlor, and Michael Sherraden, founder and director of the Center for Social Development.
