Brown School honored one of its own – Cheryl Ray, MSW ’87 – at Friday’s Salute to Excellence in Education Scholarships and Awards Gala, hosted by the St. Louis American Foundation. The award aims to recognize the critical role school social workers play in educational outcomes.

“Social workers, in partnership with teachers and principals, ensure that children are physically, emotionally and socially ready to learn,” said Brown School Dean, Edward Lawlor, who presented Ray with the award. “A child who is neglected or hungry cannot fully be present in the classroom – school social workers tirelessly reach out to the family, community agencies, teachers, and principals to put in place the supports needed for that child’s educational success. Cheryl Ray’s commitment to the children in the Saint Louis Public Schools exemplifies the impact and importance of school social workers.”

Ray has worked with the St. Louis Public Schools for 17 years, designing and delivering social work services to students and their families, addressing attendance, behavior, and family problems/issues and if necessary, consult and collaborate with community agencies and organizations.

Ray received her bachelor’s in elementary education at Harris Teachers College and her social work degree at Washington University in St. Louis.  In 2003, she earned a master’s in education at St. Louis University.
