Sixth State Asset-Building Policy Conference
“Active Partnerships: Working Together and Working for the Field”

Hosted by the Center for Social Development
Sponsored by the Annie E. Casey and
Charles Stewart Mott Foundations

November 7-9, 2007
St. Louis, MO

Conference Purpose
Unprecedented interest in asset building and significant increases in the number of asset-building programs operating nationwide has taken the field in new and varied directions. This year’s conference will serve as a high-level meeting of national and regional intermediaries and other key stakeholders in the asset-building field. Discussion will focus on universal asset-building systems and strategies for inclusion.

The voices of key stakeholders are vital to: 1) gaining knowledge of assets work currently being conducted, 2) identifying new ways to move work forward, 3) creating partnerships, and 4) discovering potential gaps in the field. Key organizations, policy experts and practitioners, all with a vested interest in asset development, have been invited to this year's convening, including representatives from a diverse array of national intermediaries, academic institutions, banking regulatory agencies, funding entities, regional associations, and state assets coalitions.

The conference will offer a full day and a half of keynote speakers, strategy sessions, and related small group discussions on how collaboration can advance asset-building policy in the United States. There will be many networking opportunities as well, including an opening night reception.

This conference will offer groups an opportunity to share information, build alliances, and consider innovative universal assets policy strategies. The conference will provide an opportunity to “take the pulse” of the asset building field.

Keynote Address
The conference will begin with a keynote address from Dr. Michael Sherraden who will discuss universal asset-building policy systems.

Panel Strategy Session
A panel discussion led by key policy leaders will focus on strategic approaches to inclusion. This session will facilitate a conversation about inclusive approaches to asset building that will help poor people to build wealth.

Small Group Discussions
Each year our goal has been to make the conference more participatory by offering a forum for participants to discuss the thoughts of the keynote speaker and panelists, and to identify additional factors that adversely or positively effect the development of assets.. A second discussion session will give participants an opportunity to discuss the challenges associated with the work they presently perform and to exchange ideas. Both small group discussion sessions will be followed by a large group conversation.

Asset Building Briefing Booklet
We have asked each organization attending the conference to provide information about their asset-building initiatives. From that, we will create an Assets Briefing Booklet, which will give a brief description of the current assets work being conducted in the country. The purpose of the booklet is to help organizations identify new ways to move forward, create partnerships, identify challenges unique to the field or to the work of that organization, and to identify and address potential gaps in the field.
