“I've always had a soft spot for underdogs. After finishing my undergraduate degree, I took a job with Child Protective Services. While working as an investigator, I quickly became aware of many barriers that were working against the families on my case load. Social work is one of those fields where I feel I can make a difference in the lives of people who haven't been dealt a fair hand.
“I concentrated in health as an MSW student. While we tend to think of social work in terms of social services, we sometimes forget the impact of health on the lives of our clients. I knew I wanted to be involved in promoting health and behavior change at the community level, so I also pursued my MPH.”
After graduating, Ryan secured a position in data analysis for Advanced ICU Care, working with doctors and nurse practitioners to monitor labs, order tests, and support ICU care in rural communities. He works as a liaison between hospitals and the organization to determine satisfaction, improve care, and increase their efficiency.
“The work I am currently doing is providing me with an essential set of tools and skills that will help me fulfill my goals. I am a clinician at heart and find social work and public health to be most satisfying when practiced at the grass-roots level, within communities.”
