Student Groups

 
 

Social work students at Brown can join and participate in wide range of student-led groups. These groups allow students to build connections with those with similar interests. The groups also provide opportunities to build leadership skills.

 

Student Coordinating Council (SCC)

SCC is the student-led governing body of the Brown School. SCC oversees school-wide events and aids in facilitating activities hosted by other student groups.

  

ACCESS

ACCESS strives to increase awareness about disability issues within the Brown School and St. Louis communities. ACCESS seeks to support students to effectively address disability issues in their social work practice.

 

American Indian Student Association (AISA)

AISA acts as a support system for American Indian/Alaskan Natives students at the School of Social Work, as well as for non-Indian students who are interested in working with American Indian/Alaskan Native communities. Through campus programs, AISA will work to increase the knowledge and understanding of American Indians at Washington University in St. Louis. 

  

ASSAW

To promote awareness of the diversity, culture, socioeconomic and geo-political events in Africa and to promote interactions between African students and other students at the Brown School and within the local community.

 

Clinical Practice Social Organization (CPSO)

CPSO helps clinically-focused students optimize their experience at the school through events and meetings that develop networks for students locally, nationally, and internationally.

 

Gerontology Student Association (GSA)

GSA educates students about the latest in gerontology practice, policy, and research as set forth by the Gerontology Association of America.

 

Helping Others By Bettering Yourselves (HOBBY)

HOBBY seeks opportunities for students to explore a variety of stress relief and prevention activities in order to avoid burnout.

 

International Student Association

This group hosts recreational, cultural and educational activities.

 

Korean Student Association (KSA)

KSA hosts activities to support students from Korea who attend Brown.  The group also works to foster awareness and understanding of Korean issues at the school and in the larger community.

 

NOSOTROS

NOSOTROS is dedicated to increasing the community's awareness of Latino specific social issues and culture.

 

Outlook

Outlook is a group for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) students and straight allies. Outlook's mission is to support LGBT students and to foster awareness and understanding of LGBT issues at the school, and in the larger community.

 

South Asian Student Association (SASA)

SASA promotes cultural, educational, and political awareness and understanding of the South Asian community at the Brown School of Social Work and the broader St. Louis area. SASA also seeks to facilitate a service-oriented environment for the growing South Asian population at the school.

 

Social Workers in Health Care (SWHC)

SWHC raises awareness of the role of social workers in health care settings, and to promote positive and effective health care in the community through education, direct involvement in community programs and events, and advocacy.

 

Society of Black Student Social Workers (SBSSW)

SBSSW promotes awareness of issues impacting the local, national, and international black community by providing activities that focus on a strength based perspective of black culture.

 

Students for Change (SFC)

SFC promotes the education and awareness of social policy, both domestic and international, and the implications for social work practice. It provides opportunities for political activism both on and off campus.

 

Tikum Olam

Tikum Olam seeks to strengthen the Jewish community at the Brown School through developing a social network, performing acts of loving kindness, providing education, and building relationships with other groups.

 

Violence Against Women Awareness (VAWA)

The mission of VAWA is to bring awareness and education of violence against women to the school, and to participate in the prevention of violence against women.

 

Voices For Children (VFC)

VFC seeks to respond to diverse community needs that will improve the life conditions for children, youth, and their families through community service, education, and charitable giving.
