Key Events

We fill our academic year with a wide-range of educational events designed to create opportunities for scholarly dialogue and social interaction.

Community Service Day
During orientation, incoming social work students spend a day volunteering at local St. Louis social service agencies. The event is a great way to get to know the St. Louis community and to meet fellow incoming students. The event is organized by Brown’s Student Coordinating Council.

Convocation
We begin our school year with convocation, a school-wide lecture that highlights the scholarly work of one of our faculty. All members of the Brown School community are encouraged to attend and participate in the discussion.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Hosted each year by the Society for Black Student Social Workers, one of our student groups, we invite thought leaders to discuss and debate issues of race. This year, John H. Bryant, founder, chairman, and CEO of Operation Hope will speak to students and faculty. Last year, Journalist Kristal Brent Zook, an adjunct professor of journalism at Columbia University, discussed issues of race and gender in the media.

Buder Center Pow-Wow
For 16 years the Kathryn M. Buder Center for American Indian Studies and the American Indian Student Association have hosted a Pow-Wow to celebrate and share the Native American heritage and traidtions. Open to the public, this event features exhibits and native dances from many diverse tribes and regions.

International Festival
A highlight of the academic year, the Brown School’s annual international festival celebrates diversity of our student community. Each year members of our student body share music, stories, and cuisine from their native homelands.

The Summer Institute

In partnership with Hong Kong Polytechnic University in Kowloon and Peking University in Beijing, the Brown School hosts an annual summer institute where students can learn about critical social policy issues. This year, select students and faculty traveled to Beijing to learn more about aging in China and its implications for policy and practice.

Lecture Series
Several times a semester the Brown School hosts speakers from around the world to discuss a range of social policy issues. The 2006 series featured experts in the areas of mental health, child welfare, civil liberties, and consumer-directed care. To learn more, click here.
