This New Jersey native says he drifted into social work. “I just drifted into it. But I came to realize the MSW is the only degree that allows me to do everything I want,” Anthony claims.
He cites his grandmother, also a social worker, as influencing his decision to get a social work degree and to attend the Brown School. And during high school and college, Anthony volunteered as a tutor, getting a preview of some of the valuable skills he would learn in graduate school.
“As a tutor, you learn how to build on people’s strengths. You also learn patience and listening skills. These skills have helped me in graduate school and will be an asset in my career as well.”
Anthony says that the Brown School allows him to combine his interests in the applied social sciences, economics, and clinical social work. Since graduating, Anthony took a job as a Clinician with Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Newark, NJ, doing family crisis intervention in a state-funded initiative that works w/ families in non-life threatening crises, such as truancy, runaways, & other acute family crises.
Last August, he passed his 1st (of two) licensure exams & working on my school social worker certification as well. I am also now on the General Committee - the governing board - of the Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL, the "Quaker lobby"), the nation's oldest registered religious lobbying organization. They advocate on a number of issues, from peace & disarmament, to a more humane federal budget & Native American rights.
