Ross Brownson

Professor

"I want help accelerate the movement of research into practice so we can develop evidence-based programs and policies that improve the lives of others."

Ross Brownson is a leading
expert in chronic disease prevention and applied epidemiology. He also co-directs the Prevention Research Center, a Center for Disease Control and Prevention-funded organization that develops new ways to improve population health by adapting, implementing, and disseminating evidence-based interventions.

“I have always been active and maintained a healthy lifestyle, but it wasn’t until I was exposed to the work of my former professor, John Bagby, and his involvement in the eradication of small pox, that I learned about the victories public health can achieve.

“After earning my doctorate, I spent almost a decade working in the Missouri Department of Health, an experience that revealed the lack of evidence-based approaches available to people who were working in
the field. At that point, evidence-based public health became my passion.

“Our Prevention Research Center is undertaking some innovative work. We’re leading a cross-national partnership for physical activity research linking Brazil and the United States. Closer to home, we are working with partners in 12 rural communities in southeast Missouri to implement interventions to improve physical activity and healthy eating.”
