Inclusion in Asset Building: Research and Policy Symposium
September 21-23, 2000

"Much like the 1855 Paris art exposition became a milestone for the modern art movement, the St. Louis symposium on Inclusion in Asset Building had the feel of a pivotal gathering where an impressive range of leading scholars and practitioners gave shape to a new field of research and activism that makes "asset building" central to the reduction of poverty and more equitable growth.  The presentations were enlightening because of the sweep of history and the range of comparisons they invoked to make the case that assets matter in any serious development effort.  The St. Louis Asset symposium leaves me hungry for the many next chapters of this discussion some of which I hope will focus more on how current and proposed tools for asset building can reach the large populations most in need of this new paradigm shift to asset building."
