The Brown School offers the following benefits to City Year alumni committed to community service and civic engagement:
- Two $25,000 scholarships awarded to two City Year alumni or a one-for-one tuition award match for alumni with AmeriCorps educational award funds and do not receive a scholarship.
- No application fee.
- A one-year deferral for students admitted to Brown's MSW program who decide to complete their 1,700 hours of City Year service before starting the MSW program.
- Opportunities for City Year scholars to volunteer and participate in activities and projects sponsored by the Gephardt Institute for Public Services.
The Brown School offers the following benefits to alumni of the Coro Fellows Program in Public Affairs:
- A $20,00 scholarship award for two years of study to each Coro alum admitted to program who is deemed scholarship worthy. Admitted alumni will be considered for other merit-based scholarships, up to and including full-tuition awards.
- No application fee.
- A one-year deferral for students admitted to the MSW program who decide to complete the nine-month Coro internship before enrolling in Brown.
- Ability to pursue independent study opportunities in an area of interest with Brown faculty members.
- Ability to participate in community service cohort projects.
The Brown School offers the following benefits to Teach for America (TFA) corps members and alumni:
- A two-year deferral for students who are admitted to the social work program and choose to join TFA.
- No application fee.
- Two $35,000 Dean scholarships award to two TFA alumni annually.
- One-for-one tuition award match for members and alumni granted TFA educational award funds and do not receive a scholarship.
- Corps members and alumni may be considered for other Brown School scholarship awards.
The Brown School offers the following benefits to Peace Corps members and alumni:
- A two-year deferral for students who are admitted to the social work program and choose to join Peace Corps.
- No application fee.
- Two $35,000 John F. Kennedy scholarships award to two TFA alumni annually.
- Corps members and alumni may be considered for other Brown School scholarship awards.
The Bettie Schroth Johnson Scholarships are designed to recruit and train women for careers in social service administration. Competition is based on demonstrated leadership ability, academic record, and career goals. Scholarship recipients are required to complete the management specialization, as well as one management project per year in service to the School or the community.
Each year a number of scholarships are awarded to outstanding students interested in serving underserved minority populations. These scholarships provide some or all of a student's tuition costs. Competition is based on academic record, statement of professional orientation, and experience in social services.
The full-tuition Whitney M. Young, Jr. Scholarships are awarded each year to three students who display their commitment to social justice, as well as their current and potential leadership in areas that serve to improve interracial relations. Competition is based on academic record, references, demonstrated leadership, and commitment to social justice.
The Danforth Urban Scholars Program in Social Work offers up to five scholarships to full-time students. Each scholarship awards $30,000 over two years. Competition is based on academic record and a demonstrated commitment to working with at-risk urban populations in the St. Louis area through work experience in social services, community development volunteerism, or public service.
This annual scholarship honors an outstanding graduate student in social work who aspires to a career that exemplifies the values, ideals, and leadership of Congressman Gephardt.
